PTA provided Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Technology systems design services to Verizon Wireless for their Twinsburg Data Center. This project is a two-level, 140,000 square foot expansion that includes 50,000 square feet of Data Center area.

The building’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure systems and capacities were designed to meet the Data Center growth and operational reliability.  This resulted in a facility that is modular, redundant and expandable with ultimate capacity of 9.6 megawatts (N+1).
The Data Center Expansion was designed using three dimensional (3D) design software (Revit from AutoDesk). As such, the software being used to design the addition is enabling improved coordination of design.  Key Points of the Design are as follows:
·        New 69/12.47kV, 20MVA redundantly sized outdoor substation, facility owned. This substation serves an A/B set of 12.47kV switchgear assemblies.
·        Paralleled diesel powered generator plant expandable to eight 3000kW medium voltage units. These units are arranged to serve the A/B switchgear noted above. All is arranged to allow parallel operation with the incoming utility.
·        Raised floor electrical power is provided by fully segregated A/B UPS plants with paralleled modules. Each plant sized for N+1 capacity. The facility is arranged for fitout of three additional UPS plant pairs.
·        Electrical services for the mechanical plant are also fully segregated for A/B redundancy. Provisions for future UPS ridethough service of chillers and pump systems is included in design.
·        Lighting throughout the facility is fully automated with consideration of minimal staff occupancy.
·        Site lighting utilizes LED area lighting and is arranged to meet Level 4 light pollution standards.
·        Full secured access is designed for all raised floor spaces as well as all individual MEP spaces in order to fully document staff access to spaces. Closed circuit cameras (approximately 80 units) are installed to confirm access to spaces and monitor the site for personnel traffic, fueling, and delivery.
·        A single fire alarm system is designed to cover all preaction zones (4 systems), clean agent zones (8 initial, 6 future), and wet mist systems. Multilevel VESDA monitoring is provided for the raised floor spaces.
·        Three (3) x 825 ton Chillers expandable to a Cooling Plant Final Capacity of 4,950 tons, N+2 Redundancy for all modular phases.
·        Energy Efficiency via Water-side Free Cooling and Heat Recovery Chillers converting data center energy for building heating.
·        Chilled Water Storage enhancing cooling availability.
·        Water well system for backup water supply.
·        Rainwater harvesting system.
PTA is the prime designer for the project. Our design services include the talents of the following consultants:
Architectural Services: Structura Architects, Ltd.
Civil and Structural Engineering Services: Hammontree & Associates, Ltd.
Fire Science Engineering: Hughes Associates, Inc.
Third Party Commissioning Services: Facilities Management Concepts
Cost and Scheduling Services: Project and Construction Services, Inc
Geotechnical services: Timmerman Geotechnical Group

The construction is scheduled to be completed in early 2011.  Upon completion, the project will be pursuing two certifications:

·        Uptime Institute – Tier III Rating
·        LEED – Gold Rating
